Magnetic Fields in a Sample of Nearby Spiral Galaxies

چکیده
Both observations and modeling of magnetic fields in the diffuse interstellar gas of spiral galaxies are well developed but the theory has been confronted with observations for only a handful of individual galaxies. There is now sufficient data to consider statistical properties of galactic magnetic fields. We have collected data from the literature on the magnetic fields and interstellar media (ISM) of 20 spiral galaxies, and tested for various physically motivated correlations between magnetic field and ISM parameters. Clear correlations emerge between the total magnetic field strength and molecular gas density as well as the star formation rate. The magnetic pitch angle exhibits correlations with the total gas density, the star formation rate and the strength of the axisymmetric component of the mean magnetic field. The total and mean magnetic field strengths exhibit noticeable degree of correlation, suggesting a universal behavior of the degree of order in galactic magnetic fields. We also compare the predictions of galactic dynamo theory to observed magnetic field parameters and identify directions in which theory and observations might be usefully developed.

The Integrated Polarization of Spiral Galaxy Disks
We present integrated polarization properties of nearby spiral galaxies at 4.8 GHz, and models for the integrated polarization of spiral galaxy disks as a function of inclination. Spiral galaxies in our sample have observed integrated fractional polarization in the range . 1% to 17.6%. At inclinations less than 50 degrees, the fractional polarization depends mostly on the ratio of random to reg...

Aims. In order to analyze the importance of the star formation rate in generating and amplifying magnetic fields in the interstellar medium we perform a deep continuum polarization study of three angularly large, late type spiral galaxies. Methods. We obtained deep total power and polarization maps at 4.85 GHz of NGC 4236, NGC 4656 and IC 2574 using the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope. This wa...
متن کاملMoss: Magnetic fields in spiral galaxies
The first hints that our galaxy, the Milky Way, might host a large-scale magnetic field came in the late 1940s, from studies of the polarization of starlight. However, optical polarization is a relatively blunt tool and it was only in the late 1950s that radio synchroton observations began to indicate the presence of large-scale fields (e.g. Gardner and Davies 1966). By the early 1980s observat...
متن کاملMultiscale magnetic fields in spiral galaxies: evolution and reversals
Context. Magnetic fields in nearby, star-forming galaxies reveal large-scale patterns, as predicted by dynamo models, but also a variety of small-scale structures. In particular, a large-scale field reversal may exist in the Milky Way while no such reversals have been observed so far in external galaxies. Aims. The effects of star-forming regions in galaxies need to be included when modelling t...
متن کاملGlobal three-dimensional simulations of magnetic field evolution in a galactic disk II. Gas rich galaxies
A fully three-dimensional computation of induction processes in a disk is performed to investigate the evolution of a large-scale magnetic field in gas-rich barred and spiral galaxies in the presence of field diffusion. As input parameters we use time dependent velocity fields obtained from selfconsistent 3D N-body calculations of galactic dynamics. Our present work primarily analyzes the influ...
